<guide type="general" title="Saving Maps">

<step title="Create a Map for Saving">
<cmd type="nextOpen" ed="*" />

This guide provides information about saving one or more maps.

Start by clicking the New Map button at the top of the Editor so that we have some map to save.

The New Map window appears with the current map type selected: click the Create button.

</step>

<step title="Saving a Single Map">

Now that the map is created, notice that a * mark appears next to the Editor's tab title, for example "Base Color*", which means that the map has unsaved changes.

Let's save the map by clicking the Save Map or the "Save Map As" buttons at the top.

The Save Map window appears with the current map type checked for saving. Click the Filename text area or the [...] button next to it and the common file save window will appear. There are two important options that you need to select in this window:

The actual path and filename that the map should be saved as.

The Format and Precision Bits, which can be selected from the "Save as type" field. Click it to see the formats available.

After choosing the map path and the format/precision, click Save to return to the previous window. Then click Save again to actually save the map.

Now that the map is saved, the * that used to appear next to the Editor's tab title is gone which means there are no more unsaved changes.

</step>

<step title="Create Many Maps">
<cmd type="nextOpen" ed="*" />

Let's now see how to save multiple maps. To create these maps, let's again click the New Maps button at the top.

This time, click the Select All link that appears near the bottom, which will select for creation all the map types from the current 3D Workflow.

Click the Create button to continue.

</step>

<step title="Saving Multiple Maps">

As before, the new maps appear with the * marks next to their tab titles, as all are still unsaved.

To save them, click one of the Save Map or "Save Map As" buttons at the top.

This time the Save Maps window displays all the open maps. But to manually select all the filenames and paths, one by one, could be a lot of work...

Luckily we have the "Set Automatic Filenames" feature to assist us. This feature creates filenames for the maps, based on a selected Folder, Base Name and automatic suffixes that can be defined in the Preferences window. So, click the "Set Automatic Filenames" switch at the bottom and new fields will appear:

The Base Name is a prefix that will start all filenames.

The Folder is the actual directory where the files will be saved.

Format and Precision Bits choose the image file format and the precision bits used.

Try typing into the Base Name field: the filenames above are updated to their final forms as you type.

Press the Save button to save all maps. All files were saved and the tab titles' * unsaved marks are gone, meaning there are no unsaved changes left.
